Young Engineers Society

The Young Engineers Society is a special interest group for young members of Engineers Ireland.

About

About this network

We are the largest society in Engineers Ireland with over 10,000 young members (and growing). Through us, young members can network with other young engineers representing every discipline of engineering at events organised by the society.

As the voice of young engineers in Ireland, we facilitate their professional and personal development by:

  • Supporting, developing and promoting their knowledge and understanding
  • Promoting their visibility and standing within Engineers Ireland
  • Keeping them informed on issues affecting them

We believe young engineering professionals represent a fresh, vibrant and innovative group within the organisation and have a lot to offer Engineers Ireland.

Who can join?

Any member of Engineers Ireland under the age of 35, who is currently completing or has completed their engineering qualification.

How to join

It is free to join our network, and once you join, you can:
  • Use our discussion forum
  • Post comments on articles and blogs
  • Join the Contacts Network to locate and send messages to other professionals

Events

Our events give members an excellent opportunity to meet their peers, to share, learn, inspire and, of course, to socialise.

Meeting and organising events with young engineers across all disciplines provides access to a wealth of experience and a bank of ideas, and offers the opportunity to put ideas into action.

Members can attend Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, workshops and seminars, including:

  • Public speaking made easy
  • Report writing
  • How to get what you want, without upsetting others
  • Managing meetings

Members also benefit from seminars and services such as:

  • Joint technical presentations with other Engineers Ireland networks and professional associations
  • Information evenings on Professional Titles
  • Regular email updates on issues affecting young engineers

The majority of our evening lectures are broadcast lives as webcasts on Engineers TV or are available to download as recordings from the website.

The biggest social event in our calendar is the annual black-tie ball. Other events include the Summer BBQ and regular quiz nights.

Get involved

We welcome anyone who would like to volunteer for individual events or to get involved in organising the activities of the network.

Volunteering can help improve your skills and career prospects by:

  • Improving communication and organisational skills
  • Introducing you to a network of peers and industry associates
  • Increasing your awareness of all engineering disciplines

Committee meetings take place monthly at Engineers Ireland headquarters.

Not based in Dublin? No problem – members outside Dublin are included by conference call.

Make your engineering career account-able

Date: 5th October, 2010
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
Admission: Free. All welcome.

About the event: George Glass, president, CIMA, will discuss the role of the management accountant in creating value as part of the management team of any organization. In particular he will examine the close alignment of the roles of management accountant and engineer, drawing on his own engineering and IT backgrounds to show how a strong principles-based approach to the numbers can drive innovative thinking.  From a firsthand account of the implosion of the IT bubble to the current economic downturn he will examine how engineers in particular can contribute to and gain from the Smart Economy and economic recovery.

About the speaker: From a background in mechanical engineering to his current position as group finance director at UCM Timber Group, a leading global forest products and timber specialist company, CIMA president, George Glass’s career spans several industries and spheres of expertise. From finance through to engineering and then IT, George was an early advocate of sustainable business whilst pioneering IT and web based publishing.

George qualified initially as a mechanical engineer and joined the UK paper division of Reed International as a production engineer working on capital intensive projects. Whilst there, he began to appreciate that an ability to analyse the financial side of such projects gave a distinct advantage and went on to study for the CIMA professional qualification and to train as a management accountant.

As an engineer, George found he could relate to the logic of financial information and to working with numbers whilst developing a growing interest in the, then, emerging IT sector.  The latter appealed to his engineering mind and saw him take up several related positions within the Reed Group, including the post of divisional systems controller. From there he joined Butterworth Publishing as IT director, where he was responsible for an extensive systems upgrade programme and development of a worldwide communications network. He went on to move to Haymarket Publishing, a company that was spearheading the introduction of IT into magazine publishing, and  was responsible for the wholesale introduction of desktop publishing systems. He subsequently assisted in the development of web based publishing. Appointed company secretary to Balfour Timber and Hollanden Timber, following the group’s acquisition by UCM Timber, he was asked to become group finance director.

George has played a significant role within CIMA chairing a number of committees including both the technical and the lifelong learning policy committees and the project board overseeing the revision of CIMA's syllabus.  He has also been actively involved with IFAC, the global organisation for professional accountants.
