Types of membership
Membership grades
We offer two main grades of membership:
- Ordinary member (MIEI) - usually achieved through an accredited level 7, 8 or 9 qualification
- Technician member (TechIEI) - usually achieved through an accredited level 6 qualification
Other paths to membership
If you do not have an accredited qualification, you can still become a member of Engineers Ireland.

Professional titles
Engineers Ireland plays an important role in acknowledging the achievements of our members by awarding them with professional titles:
- Fellow (CEng FIEI)
- Chartered engineer (CEng)
- Associate engineer (AEng MIEI)
- Engineering technician (Eng Tech IEI)
Other membership categories
Student
Students of accredited engineering courses are entitled to free membership of Engineers Ireland.
Corporate affiliate
Engineers Ireland may offer corporate affiliate membership to an organisation which does one of the following:
- Employs engineers and engineering technologists and technicians
- Has a major engineering involvement and/or commitment
- Is interested in promoting engineering as fundamental to national development, employment and wealth creation
- Is interested in the education and training of professional engineers, engineering technologists and technicians up to the best international standards
Affiliate
If you are not currently eligible for membership of Engineers Ireland, but are associated with the engineering profession by your employment in an engineering role, you can apply for affiliate membership.
Companion
You may be eligible for companion membership if you have attained a senior position in a profession other than engineering and if Council considers that extending membership to you would constitute a mutually beneficial link with Engineers Ireland.
